Course Overview

Physics is an exciting subject which aims to explain how things work, from the smallest of particles to the vastness of galaxies and the universe. With this A level you will develop skills in physics, maths, technical writing, observation, measuring instruments, research and independent work.

  • Entry Requirements
Grade 9-5 in GCSE Physics or grade 9-5 in GCSE Combined Science, as well as grade 9-5 in GCSE Maths. Please see our Entry Requirements for more guidance.
  • Benefits/Skills
Studying physics at A level provides you with a deeper understanding of how the world works and teaches a range of skills: methodical, investigative and analytical, to name a few. It’s a subject that is multifaceted, underpinning everything from medicine to engineering. This is why physics is one of the highly sought-after qualifications by employers.
  • Units/Modules
Physics has become increasingly important in the world of work, changing our leisure time and the influence of technology. It solves problems, helps diagnose medical conditions, creates new materials, suggests possible solutions to the energy crisis and is the science behind the internet. Topics covered at A level include the fundamental theories in physics. You will also gain insight into a range of subject matters, including atomic structure, astrophysics, radioactivity, particle interactions at the quark level, quantum physics, vectors, forces, linear motion and momentum, and material and thermal physics.
  • Careers/Progression
As a discipline, physics is used in many areas of industry including engineering, health and biomedicine, public services, utilities, environmental monitoring, scientific research, astrophysics, education and computing to mention but a few. Physics will develop your problem-solving, research and analytical skills.
